'American Idol' Still A Boys' Club: Lee DeWyze Wins

"American Idol" premiered in January this year amid hype that Season 9 would be a "girls' season." But when that didn't quite pan out — all of the female front-runners, except for Crystal Bowersox, were voted off early — the judges (especially Simon Cowell) changed their tune and started blatantly throwing their support behind Lee DeWyze. Their favoritism couldn't have more obvious on the night the top three performed, when Lee got a big "Hallelujah moment," complete with an eight-member choir. Well, apparently the judges' and producers' tactics worked: Despite delivering drastically worse performances than Crystal on Tuesday, Lee DeWyze won Season 9 on Wednesday night.

Remembering Michael Jackson, "King of Pop"

When Michael Jackson anointed himself "King of Pop" over two decades ago, there was considerable rumbling about his hubris: Yes, he may have become a world sensation with record-setting sales of "Thriller," and yes, he may have had a string of No. 1 hits with smashes like "Billie Jean" and "Beat It," but the KING OF ALL POP MUSIC?

Surely, in a modern music history that has given us Elvis Presley, the Beatles, Stevie Wonder and so many other greats, that title was more than a bit inflated.

But in actuality, Jackson understated his significance.

While his elaborate, stop-on-a-dime dance moves and sensual soprano may have influenced generations of musicians, Michael Jackson stood for much more than pop greatness — or tabloid weirdness. One of entertainment's greatest icons, he was a ridiculously gifted, equally troubled genius who kept us captivated — at his most dazzling, and at his most appalling.

At the height of his fame, he was among the world's most beloved figures. Heads of state clamored to meet him, screen legends like Elizabeth Taylor were his close friends, and worldwide, simply the mention of his name could make people do the moonwalk, from Los Angeles to Laos. (The New York Times once accurately described him as one of the six most famous people on the planet).

His whispery, high-pitched speaking voice was constantly imitated, his fedora hat on his lean frame instantly recognizable, his childlike image endearing.

He influenced artists ranging from Justin Timberlake to Madonna, from rock to pop to R&B to even rap, across genres and groups that no other artist was able to unite. He changed music videos with "Thriller" in 1983, still considered by most to be the greatest music video ever made. Stars like Beyonce still mimic his moves. His one glove, white socks and glittery jackets made him a fashion trendsetter, making androgyny seem sexy and even safe.

Almost everyone wanted that Michael Jackson connection (and those who didn't were afraid to say so out loud). His celebrity and adoration was staggering.

So when his image began to crumble, becoming twisted and disturbed, that aspect, too, was larger than life. His multiple plastic surgeries and his vitiligo illness, which saw him transform from a masculine looking black man to a wispy, pale-faced, almost noseless figure, was held up as the standard for bad plastic surgery, a freakish-looking character.

His eccentric behavior left people confused, and when allegations (and later criminal charges) that accused him of sexually molesting two boys surfaced on two separate occasions, people were repelled by his alleged behavior and the man that their former idol had become.

And yet, it was hard to look away.

In the early days, no one wanted to. Jackson came into our public consciousness as an impossibly cute preteen wonder in 1969, an unbelievably precocious singer in his family band, The Jackson 5. The soon-to-be Motown legend channeled songs like "I Want You Back," and "I'll Be There" with a passion and soulfulness that belied his young years. Even then, his dance moves, copped from the likes of James Brown and Jackie Wilson, were exquisite, and his onstage presence outshone seasoned veterans.

The spotlight began to dim when he entered his late teens, however, and while he still had R&B hits with the Jacksons, it seemed as if he would never recapture the pop success that he burst onto the scene with as a child.

But then he met Quincy Jones, and the musical landscape changed. With the legendary producer, Jackson crafted "Off the Wall," what for most artists would be a career-defining album, from the string-enhanced disco classic "Don't Stop Til You Get Enough," a party staple which he wrote, to the bitter ballad "She's Out of My Life."

The best-selling album showed the world a grown-up Michael Jackson with grown-up artistry, showcasing his breathy alto-soprano voice and providing a springboard to his early videos, which gave a glimpse of the dance wizardry to come.

At the time, it was Jackson's music that was front and center. A 21-year-old who spoke in a breathy, high voice, still lived at home, had his first, barely noticeable nose job and was a self-claimed virgin in an industry known for its hedonism, he was certainly an odd figure, but his personal life had yet to become intertwined with his public image.

That began to change during "Thriller" — the album that would become his greatest success and his career-defining achievement. Also produced by Jones, it featured even more of Jackson's songwriting talents. Selling more than 50 million albums to become the globe's best-selling disc, it spawned seven Billboard top 10 hits, including two No. 1s with "Billie Jean" and "Beat It." It won a then-unprecedented eight Grammy awards and numerous other awards.

It was an impact measured much more than in stats.

He broke MTV's color barrier, becoming the first black artist to be prominently featured on the young, rock-oriented channel when the success of "Billie Jean" and "Beat It" became so overwhelming it could not be ignored. He also established the benchmark for the way videos would be made, with stunning cinematography, precision choreography that recalled great movie musicals. Jackson's amazing talents as a dancer were also displayed to the world during his Emmy-nominated performance for Motown's 25th anniversary. It is still considered one of TV's most thrilling moments, from his moonwalk strut to his pulsating pelvic movements.

But as Jackson's fame grew, his eccentricities, from his strange affinity for children and all things childlike, to his at times asexual image to his fascination with plastic surgery, began to dull the shine off of his sparkling image. As the years went by, those "eccentricities" would become more bizarre, and completely tarnish it.

His skin, once a dark brown, became the color of paste, a transition he blamed on the skin disease vitiligo, though some believed he simply bleached his skin in order to appear more Caucasian. That belief was rooted in his frequent plastic surgeries, which whittled his nose from a broad frame to an almost impossibly narrowed bridge. His image was a tough one to look at, much less embrace.

If his plastic surgery made him disturbingly unwatchable, soon, allegations of child abuse would make him reviled among many. He was first accused of molesting a 13-year-old boy in 1993; no charges were ever filed, a civil lawsuit was settled out of court and he always maintained his innocence. Although he had a chart-topping album with "HIStory" in 1995 and was still a superstar, he was a damaged one — and would never fully recover from the allegation.

A criminal charge of molestation of another young boy in 2004, which resulted in his acquittal in 2005, further stripped his marketability and his legacy. After the trial ended, he went into seclusion, and while top hitmakers from Ne-Yo to Akon courted him to make new music, no new CD was ever released. He was overwhelmed with legal and financial troubles, with what seemed like weekly lawsuits against him seeking money owed.

A comeback seemed to be most unlikely. His reputation was considered irreparably damaged, his image mocked and his name an automatic punchline. But when he announced he'd be doing a series of comeback concerts at London's famed O2 Arena, not only did the initial dates sell out immediately, the demand was so insatiable he was signed on for an unprecedented 50 shows. He was expected to embark on a worldwide tour sometime after the concert series was completed in March.

Of course, there will be no comeback now, no Jackson 5 reunion, no new music to share with millions of fans. But the legacy he leaves behind is so rich, so deep, that no scandal can torpedo it. The "Thriller" may be gone, but the thrill will always remain.

Cook Triumphs Over Archuleta On 'American Idol'

Grown-up rocker David Cook has triumphed over smooth-voiced teen David Archuleta to become the new "American Idol."

While Archuleta was heaped with praise by the judges the night before, the voters decided otherwise -- and it wasn't even close. Host Ryan Seacrest said during Wednesday's show that 12 million votes was the difference.

Cook was overcome by emotion, bending toward the stage after his name was announced.

"This is amazing," he said. "This is all your fault," he added, addressing the brother who Cook had accompanied to the "Idol" audition that started it all.

Cook immediately took the microphone and began to sing "Time of my Life," which won the annual "Idol songwriting competition."

American Idol' Gets Down To Its Final 2 Contestants

It'll be David vs. David. Syesha Mercado was voted off "American Idol" Wednesday night, paving the way for the expected showdown between David Archuleta and David Cook.

Mercado, a 21-year-old actress from Sarasota, Fla., was the last woman standing on the top-rated Fox contest. The big-voiced belter surpassed a more accomplished singer (Carly Smithson), a fan favorite (Brooke White) and a statuesque country crooner (Kristy Lee Cook).

While other contestants floundered, Mercado challenged herself with ambitious song choices like Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come." She showed more personality -- and lots of leg -- while swiveling her hips in a glittery gold minidress for a rendition of "Proud Mary." She cried when Paula Abdul gave her a standing ovation last week. Email This Story IM This Story Print This Story

Abdul held the sugar on Tuesday's performance show, telling Mercado that she thought her performance of "Hit Me Up" wasn't "good enough to get into the finals."

With Mercado out of the way, "Idol" can now fully hype the David vs. David matchup.

There's Archuleta, the 17-year-old singing prodigy from Murray, Utah, with the overly involved stage dad. And there's Cook, the 25-year-old former bartender from Blue Springs, Mo., with an emo edge that the angelic Arculeta lacks.

Who will snag the title next Wednesday?

One thing is for sure: His name will be David.

Avril Lavigne Can't Sing...For Now

Avril Lavigne has been rendered speechless after coming down with acute laryngitis. The illness has forced the Canadian punky popster to scrap six additional shows on her North American tour, bringing the grand total of nixed dates to eight.

"My sincerest apologies to all of my fans," she said in a statement Saturday night. "My intention was to complete the rest of the tour, but tonight at sound check in Anaheim I realized this wasn't possible. Even though I have been resting my voice for days, when I tried to sing nothing came out."

Refunds will be available on Monday for the six concerts—in addition to Anaheim and Sunday's gig in Los Angeles, Lavigne will skip dates in Santa Barbara and San Jose, Calif., and Spokane and Eureka, Wash. She had previously canceled shows last week in San Diego and Phoenix.

The Cure To Release New Single Monthly

The Cure have announced that they will release a new single each month leading up to the release of their 13th studio album in September.

Robert Smith and company will drop the first single from the as-yet untitled album on May 13, and intend to release a different a- and b-side single on the 13th of each month until the album is released on September 13.

The first single, "The Only One," includes the b-side "NY Trip."The second single, "Freakshow"--due out June 13--contains the b-side "All Kinds Of Stuff."

Both b-sides are exclusive to the singles and will not appear on the full-length album. They were produced by Smith and Keith Uddin.

The July 13 and August 13 singles will be announced shortly.

The band is set to kick off an extensive U.S. tour in support of the new album beginning May 9.

Paula Abdul Left 'Empty' By 2nd Song

On a night when "American Idol" switched up the judges' format by making them hold their appraisals until every contestant had a turn, Abdul offered feedback for two songs sung by Jason Castro - except that he'd only sung one.

Unlike the usual format, in which each "Idol" performance is judged immediately, Abdul, Randy Jackson and Simon Cowell were made to take notes, then offer individual critiques in rapid succession at the end of each round. The reason, Seacrest offered, was because "this show is so tight."

So after each of the final five contestants sang one Neil Diamond song, Jackson zipped through his appraisals, offering a few terse words for each before kicking it to a visibly flustered Abdul.

"Oh gosh, we've never had to write these things down _ I'm not fast enough," she began, shuffling through her notecards. "Jason, first song, I loved hearing your lower register, which we never really hear, um ... ."

And that's where it started going off the rails.

"The second song, I felt like your usual charm wasn't _ it was missing for me. It kind of left me a little empty."

Indeed.

All six people on stage, including Seacrest, stared blankly (except Syesha Mercado, who wore the furrowed brow of mystification).

"The two songs," she continued, "made me feel like you're not fighting hard enough to get into the top four."

After a smattering of nervous crowd laughter, Jackson finally broke the tension.

"That was just on the first song," he said sheepishly, pointing up to Castro. "Just on the first one."

Simon Cowell closed his eyes and shook his head, and began to guffaw as Abdul's confusion mounted.

"Oh my god, I thought you _ I thought you sang twice!" she said.

She then tried to explain that she got confused by looking ahead at the notes for David Cook.

At that point Seacrest, who makes his money by smoothing over situations just such as these, pointed to Abdul, saying: "You're seeing the future, baby!" before cutting her off and throwing it to Cowell.

Even Cowell gathered himself to help patch up the moment, patting Abdul on the shoulder and asking, in an effort to speed things along, "Paula, who was your favorite?"

Her reply: Cook (the same contestant whose performance she supposedly noted as having left her "empty").

Pressed for time, Cowell then put an end to the awkward-fest by bursting into his own rapid-fire valuation: "Jason, forgettable; David Cook, just above average; Brooke (White) a nightmare; David Archuleta, I thought it was amateurish; and Syesha, I thought it was old-fashioned.

"So guys ... I want to see the performance of a lifetime coming up," he said, as if to ensure absolute clarity, "the second time around."

American Idol - No Superstar Treatment for Carly

Although she positively rocked the title track from Jesus Christ Superstar on an evening dedicated to the work of musical-theater titan Andrew Lloyd Webber, Carly Smithson was eliminated from American Idol Wednesday, leaving five aspiring popsters in the mix to become the next big thing.

"I'm very proud of myself—I'm not upset that I'm going home," said the Irish-born songstress, who earlier in the competition was told more than once that she needed to lighten up.

To which Simon Cowell, always the antidiplomat, replied "Well, you should be."

Despite being one of Smithson's more vocal critics, Cowell was ultimately a strong supporter of the 24-year-old singer, who was on her second Idol journey after a visa complication prematurely ended her first run in season five.

But sometimes all that turning in one of the best performances of the night gets you is a ticket to nowhere, as Syesha Mercado knows all too well. It was almost "One Rock 'n' Roll Too Many" for the sprightly 21-year-old, who joined Smithson in one of the least-deserving bottom-twos in recent memory, even though 24 hours before she had hit the jaunty tune from Webber's Starlight Express out of the park.

Maybe the low quality of Jason Castro's performance caused a temporary stupor that prevented people from picking up the phone.

But while everyone was trying to forget Castro's rough, albeit doe-eyed, manhandling of "Memory" from Cats, one of the most famous stage ballads of all time, no one could stop buzzing about Brooke White.

Webber had been especially psyched for White's performance, expounding on how connected she was to the music and how lovely her voice sounded.

"In the dress rehearsals, she was flawless," the composer told Idol host Ryan Seacrest.

And upon further review, White's take on "You Must Love Me" from Evita did evoke the big-screen Madonna version, but her composure never recovered from her start-stop opening hitch—a misstep similar to the one that plagued her on '80s night when she performed the Police's "Every Breath You Take."

But both Cowell and Randy Jackson said they probably would have done the same thing and maybe the voters agreed.

So even though her faux pas turned "You Must Love Me" into a literal plea for acceptance, the sweet-natured nanny from Arizona gets the chance to start again. Literally.

Also golden were David Cook and David Archuleta, polar opposites in style yet currently Siamese twins as far as the fans' love is concerned.

American Idol - The Brooke White Reboot

The American Idol judges couldn't agree if Brooke White did the right—or wrong—thing last night by rebooting her performance of "You Must Love Me."

And there's not quite a consensus among outside singing experts, either.

"Unless it's a total trainwreck, I think you try to make it through," James Lugo, a record producer and vocal coach, said today. "Personally, I think starting and stopping is kind of hack."

To Gina Eckstine, a singer and vocal teacher, going forward is the only way to go. Most of the time.

"If there's no more, and you can't move ahead, sometimes you just have to admit it," said Eckstine.
White opted for the latter route on Tuesday. Some 13 seconds into her performance, she turned to the house band and said, "I'm sorry." Taking the hint, the band restarted the song. White made it through the number, introduced by Madonna in the movie version of Evita, without further incident.

After the song ended, Paula Abdul, the nice Idol judge, looked pained as she considered her words. Firmly but gently, she offered White the following edict: "You must never start and stop."

In a twist, Simon Cowell, the non-nice Idol judge, gave White a pass on the do-over, apparently because it entertained him. "This is why I love live TV," he said. "It was so dramatic—the beginning, you know."

Under questioning from host Ryan Seacrest, White said she restarted because "I lost the lyric."

Cowell claimed he would have done the same thing, and called White's decision "brave." Abdul persisted, telling White she should have vamped until she found the words. Cowell and Randy Jackson, the wild-card Idol judge, disagreed.

On the matter of to vamp or not to vamp, Abdul offered the best advice, the singing experts said.

"I'm not always in agreement with Paula Abdul," Lugo said. "But I am this time."

Eckstine was also on board with the "Straight Up" star. "Most of the time the audience doesn't [realize you've] made a mistake," she said.

The daughter of the late singing great Billy Eckstine, Gina Eckstine said her father taught her how to cover a muffed lyric: "If you forget the second verse, sing the first verse again."

In general, Lis Lewis, a Los Angeles-based vocal coach, concurred. But she reminded that American Idol is unique in that the judges, Abdul included, have tended to point out when a singer misses a lyric.

"Who cares? Except them [the Idol judges]," Lewis said. "The audience wouldn't care. The audience wouldn't really notice."

Lugo sounded a big amen. "Dude, you're singing cover songs," he said. "Who gives a s--t if you forget the lyrics? I think it's irrelevant."

Interestingly, on Tuesday's Idol, botched lyrics, outside of White's botched performance, were, for once, rendered irrelevant.

Both David Archuleta and Carly Smithson missed lines. Archuleta even mumbled through a rough patch. But neither was called out on the breaches. (Archuleta did, however, get a talking-to from Abdul during the first Beatles week when he sang gobbledygook for a few measures of "We Can Work It Out," and, to compound the sin, let the mistake show on his face.)

Lewis said she wouldn't even consider White's faux pas all that bad—"if she hadn't done it before."

Four weeks ago, White started, stopped and restarted "Every Breath You Take." The relaunch stood out less than Tuesday's because it came after White, providing her own accompaniment, had played but a few notes on the piano. Indeed, even White seemed to forget about the gaffe, saying that last night was the first time she'd missed a lyric. And, technically, she was correct. Her problem with "Every Breath You Take" was the key, not a lyric.

Whatever the case, both do-overs stood out to Lewis. "It seems to be a crutch she's relying on," she said.

Eckstine, who didn't watch Idol last night (not to worry—she TiVo'd), said she wasn't surprised to hear that it was White who suffered the meltdown. "She's been very unsteady and unsure," she said.

But will White's latest trouble be her last trouble? Will it seal her fate as Wednesday night's unchosen one?

"Unfortunately, if you're on a show like American Idol," Eckstine said, "you are being judged."

Vocal Problems Of Jordin Sparks

Vocal problems have forced Jordin Sparks to temporarily withdraw from Alicia Keys' tour and cancel all performances for the rest of the month, a representative for the "American Idol" champ said Monday.

"All of her April activities have been postponed or canceled so she can take care of her voice properly," a 19/Jive Records spokeswoman told The Associated Press.

The 18-year-old singer, whose hits include "Tattoo" and "No Air," was scheduled to be the opening act on Keys' tour, which kicked off over the weekend in Hampton, Va. In addition to missing the tour's first month, Sparks was forced to cancel a planned performance at the Earth Day Network & Green Apple Festival concert in Washington, D.C.

But Sparks, who is under a doctor's care, is expected to rejoin Keys' tour in May or perhaps sooner if she progresses, the label said.

"Jordin Sparks is on vocal rest and is expected to make a full and complete recovery," according to a statement from 19/Jive Records. "Sparks has been going nonstop over the past two years and now she's going through the normal course of learning how to manage and care for her voice."

Sparks was the youngest winner of "American Idol" when she won the talent competition last year. She released her self-titled debut album late last year.

New Music Video Web Site

A company backed by investors including Will Smith and major record labels has launched a new Web site offering 10,000 free, high-definition music videos.

Universal Music Group announced Wednesday that it has joined EMI and Sony BMG in backing Santa Monica-based PluggedIn.

The Web site features music videos from artists such as Gwen Stefani, Green Day, Coldplay and Norah Jones and is powered by a new media player that supports full-screen high-definition video.

PluggedIn also announced a partnership with Smith's production and management company Overbrook Entertainment.

Six Idols Left

The praise of Mariah Carey couldn't rescue Kristy Lee Cook from elimination on "American Idol." The 24-year-old resident country singer from Selma, Ore., was the latest casualty as the Fox sing-off narrowed the competition to six finalists.

Though guest mentor Carey said Cook's rendition of "Forever" gave her chills, Simon Cowell was not so impressed.

Brooke White and Syesha Mercado joined Cook with the lowest number of votes on Wednesday's results show. When asked to predict the loser, Cowell said: "Maybe Kristy -- you know, your time's up this time, sweetheart."

Cook cried but took the eviction in stride. She directed her reprisal of "Forever" to Cowell, who grinned awkwardly.

The telecast also featured performances by "Idol" also-ran Elliott Yamin and Carey, who sang "Bye Bye" from her new album "EMC2."

Ashlee Simpson's Engagement

Ashlee Simpson and Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz get engagement congrats from family, fans, bandmates, and an ex!

Two days after Ashlee Simpson and Fall Out Boy's Pete Wentz shocked their fans by announcing their engagement via a blog post on FriendsOrEnemies.com, reactions are starting to come in from those who know the couple well ... and from those who think they do.

"All I can really say is I'm totally happy for them," FOB frontman Patrick Stump told MTV News in an e-mail. "And I'm happy for myself, too. I'll probably get to wear a tux."

"My sister is overflowing with joy," Ashlee's older sister, Jessica Simpson, said in a statement. "Pete is an incredible soul. They naturally bring out the best in each other. I couldn't be happier."

Ashlee's dad and manager, Joe, told that Wentz asked for his permission to propose to his daughter, and that "I told him that I would be honored to have him as part of my family."

Even Ryan Cabrera, Ash's former boyfriend, weighed in to the site, giving the newly engaged couple a resounding thumbs-up.

"I think they're really good together," he told the magazine. "I met [Wentz] a couple times, and he was really nice and intelligent, so I was like, 'Very cool, go for it!' "

Of course, fan reactions to the engagement were decidedly less glossy. On FriendsOrEnemies.com, comments ranged from elation ("FINALLY!!!!! i knew u guys would get married one day! I am happy for both of you!!!!!") to anger ("i hope assslee DIESS IN A F---ING HOLE"), with a few stops in crazytown thrown in for good measure ("I couldn't believe well i guess i didnt want to believe it its kinda weird i mean pete a husband w/ kids can u really picture that and w/ ashlee well maybe u guys will last CONGRATS now im gonna go stalk patrick ha he isnt married").

The reaction was similar on Wentz's personal blog, where the bassist celebrated his engagement by posting a piece of pop art featuring his dog Hemingway. (Uh, congrats?)

"I love the way she makes you smile, bright boy for wanting to keep someone like that around," one commenter wrote.

"Hey Pete, did you hear that? Little emo hearts just broke all over the world," another added. "Much happiness to you and the lady."

No Charity For 'Idol' Finalist

American Idol" said g'day to Michael Johns. The Australian-born singer was eliminated Thursday from Fox's popular singing competition as the contest was narrowed down to the top seven finalists following Wednesday's "Idol Gives Back" charity event.

The dismissal came as a surprise to many since no contestants were evicted after last year's special "Idol" fundraiser.

Johns, 29, sang Aerosmith's "Dream On" during Tuesday's inspirational-themed performance show. Simon Cowell and Randy Jackson didn't think the song choice suited Johns, although Paula Abdul thought the selection was perfect.

Johns, who now lives in Los Angeles, had never been in the show's bottom three.

Carly Smithson and Syesha Mercado were the other lowest vote-getters.

Hometown Desperately Seeking Madonna

It used to be her playground, but Madonna wasn't always welcome.
Until now.

After vetoing several prior attempts to honor its most famous native, typically due to her provocative antics, civic leaders in Bay City, Mich., are belatedly getting into the groove.

In a letter sent to the Material One, Mayor Charles M. Brunner extended a formal invitation for the 49-year-old singer to accept a key to the city, according to the Bay City Times.

"We have always been proud of your accomplishments but recently your induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame reminded us that we need to honor you with the highest honor that Bay City can offer," read the missive.

But hizzoner may be engaging in a little revisionist history.

Turns out a former mayor, Timothy Sullivan, and other officials weren't so proud of Madonna's accomplishments back in 1985, when fans first floated the idea of her getting a key to the city upon her "Like a Virgin" success. Sullivan and crew also rejected a professional sculpture of Madonna by an Italian artist, believing her to be a flash-in-the-plan artist.

Hoping to get back in vogue, Guy Greve, the president of the Bay Arts Council, told the Times he plans to commission a new sculpture of Madonna striking one of her famous poses as an "homage for her artistic contributions."

Brunner, meanwhile, has been lobbying the performer's father to help them persuade her to attend their celebration, which may also include a movie screening (Swept Away, anyone?) and a Madonna tribute album featuring local musicians covering her biggest hits.

There was no immediate comment from Madonna's publicist.

The pop queen remains hotter than ever. Aside from her enshrinement in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, she just cinched a $120 million, 10-year partnership with Live Nation, and her latest album, Hard Candy, takes aim at the pop charts on April 29.

Radiohead, Lights Up Lollapalooza

Thom Yorke's crew is set to join Kanye West, Nine Inch Nails and Rage Against the Machine as the headliners for the annual Lollapalooza festival at Chicago's Grant Park, running Aug. 1 through Aug. 3.

The 2008 lineup is a virtual alt-rock who's-who: Chitown natives Wilco, the Raconteurs, a reunited Love and Rockets, Gnarls Barkley, Bloc Party, Cat Power, Mark Ronson, the Black Keys, Broken Social Scene, the National, Lupe Fiasco, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, G. Love and Special Sauce, and Flogging Molly.

Since morphing three years ago from an alternative-music lover's traveling carnival into a three-day family-friendly affair held in Lake Michigan-adjacent parkland in downtown Chicago, Lollapalooza has rebranded itself as one of America's premiere rock megafestivals, alongside Coachella and Bonnaroo.

The 2007 edition attracted a capacity crowd of 167,330 over the three days, grossing a whopping $9.8 million in ticket sales, per Billboard Boxscore, to rank as the fifth-highest grossing festival worldwide.

And this year's Lolla is shaping up to be the biggest yet.

Since going on sale, three-day $175 Early Bird passes have already been snapped up, while $190 advance passes are reportedly going fast. Once those sell out, a regular festival pass, retailing for $205, will be the only way in.

Aside from featuring 120 music acts, the fest will feature a variety of comedy acts, hip-hop workshops, organic food stands, interactive games, a scavenger hunt and even a petting zoo.

Festival founder Perry Farrell says that organizers are also working on a deal with Apple to hatch iTunes-only unique content, possibly pairing up various acts onstage and, eventually, in the studio as well, which Lollapalooza and Apple would then release.

"These will be recorded in a studio but, of course, because we can share files online, we don't have to be in the same place at the same time—we have finishing studios all over the world for the artists to finish the piece off," Farrell told MTV News. "We'll start to talk with Radiohead about putting them with someone they'd like to collaborate with, tell them how it's going to go down."

Lollapalooza will serve as the kickoff to the second leg of Radiohead's North American tour.

The band has headlining gigs at the All Points West Festival in New Jersey's Liberty State Park Aug. 8 and 9 and the Outside Lands Music & Arts Festival at Golden Park in San Francisco. Radiohead is also on track to perform in Indianapolis, Cleveland, Montreal, Toronto, Vancouver and Los Angeles' Hollywood Bowl, before wrapping things up in Santa Barbara on Aug. 28.

Looks Like Jay-Z And Beyonce Are Married

There was a swirl of activity Friday at the rap mogul's Tribeca apartment. Delivery trucks funneled in and out of the building, dropping off silver candelabras and white flowers. A white tent was set up on the roof, and stars including Beyonce's former Destiny's Child bandmates, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, along with Gwyneth Paltrow, were spotted arriving.

A swarm of media camped outside the building was in a state of frenzy, snapping and shouting at any sport-utility vehicle that drove down the cobblestone street.

The Web sites of celebrity magazines People and Us Weekly reported the couple married and threw a lavish but small party at the apartment Friday, citing unnamed sources who are friends with the pair. The Web sites reported their families attended the party.

Rumors circulated all week about the event after a report that the couple had taken out a marriage license in Scarsdale, N.Y. Representatives for Beyonce Knowles and Jay-Z declined to comment on reports ahead of the event. Jay-Z's publicist had no comment Saturday.

The couple, who have apparently been dating for six years, have never publicly acknowledged they are together. Knowles, 26, and Jay-Z, 38, whose real name is Shawn Carter, have collaborated on the songs "03 Bonnie and Clyde" and "Crazy In Love."

Clay Aiken has finally set a release date of May 6 for his first album of original material in five years.

For those keeping score, On My Way Here is technically Aiken's fourth studio release. But it's only his second to feature new songs. Since releasing the multiplatinum smash Measure of a Man following his runner-up finish on 2003's American Idol, Aiken has failed to match the success with his subsequent albums, compilations of Christmas carols and cover songs, respectively.

According to an announcement Friday touting the release date, the new album will be reflective of a more mature Aiken, with the songs touching on the life lessons racked up by the singer in the years since his reality show stint and subsequent fame.

"I thought if we could find songs that relate to what's gone on in my life over the past five years and address what I've learned from my experiences, it would be a great concept for my album," Aiken said, adding that the album's title came from the title of a song written by One Republic frontman Ryan Tedder.

"Since I got into this business, I've learned so much about myself. I think this album covers how far I've come, personally and professionally."

Aiken has been hitting the recording studio since January, squeezing sessions in during the day before his nightly performances in Spamalot. The album's release coincides with the end of Aiken's Broadway run.

While a full track list has not yet been released, the cover track and a song called "Ashes" are among those expected to make the final cut. Aiken is expected to hit the road for a nationwide tour this July.

New Kids Set for Nationwide Block Party

They may not be new and they're definitely not kids, but they're heading back to the block.

The New Kids on the Block—aka Joey McIntyre, Donnie Wahlberg, Danny Wood and Jordan and Jonathan Knight—are out to prove they've still got the right stuff, confirming on the Today show Friday they're set to reunite and hit the road for the first time in 14 years.

The quintet, a prototypical boy band from Boston who sold more than 70 million albums and provided the template for 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys, announced they would be embarking on a nationwide tour this fall following the release of a new album.

"Long live the Block!" McIntyre shouted upon the group's revelation, doing his part to rile up the already overhyped crowd.

"It is better than Christmas," trumpetetd Jonathan Knight.

Once the man band was unveiled—with a drumroll and from behind a red-velvet curtain set up outdoors—Wahlberg wasted no time in getting down to the business of the announcement.

"We started recording in August," he said. "Really, it was music that brought us back."

Wahlberg also noted that the reunion announcement, which has been in the ether for months, was something the group wasn't planning on confirming so early on, but felt they needed to after word began to leak out in January.

"We really weren't going to announce this yet," he said, adding that the boys-no-more band ultimately decided to confirm the rumors for their fans' sake.

"The fans got a little excited, but they got a little unsure, so we thought we better come out and let them know it's official. We hope to tour in the fall—we're already setting up limited dates."

The undeniably aged entertainers, reunited 22 years after first forming and 20 years after the release of their debut album, Hanging Tough, are apparently more than willing to embrace their status as the elder statesmen of teenybop pop. (Jonathan Knight's the eldest, at 39; Wahlberg and Wood are both 38; Jordan Knight is 37; and McIntyre is the baby, at 35.)

Asked what they had in store for long-suffering fans on their new album, McIntyre teased, "Three things: the economy, health care and job security."

"We've got some new material," Wahlberg said. "We're going to dance, we're going to sing, we're going to do it all."

Not deterred by the inevitable litany of late-night jokes that will come in the wake of a group of thirtysomething men reuniting as a boy band, Wood put fans' NKOTB-loving minds at ease by clarifying that the group would not be changing its name to more closely reflect the passing of time.

"We're all kids at heart, so it's not going to change," he said.

Before retiring from center stage, the group also made one more eardrum-shattering announcement. The group's first live show in 14 years, before the launch of their tour, will take place May 16 on the Today show as part of the morning program's summer concert series.

Idol Says Malu-Bye to Ramiele

Unfortunately, it didn't cross too many minds to vote for Ramiele Malubay this week. The diminutive singer was eliminated from American Idol Wednesday after not quite connecting with her Dolly Parton song of choice on a performance show devoted to ditties penned by the country-music icon.

Though Paula Abdul said she was proud of Malubay after her solid yet unexciting take on "Do I Ever Cross Your Mind" and Randy Jackson "wasn't mad" at her afterward, the majority of the millions of votes cast were on behalf of the eight other contestants still in the running this season.

The super-cute 20-year-old from Miramar, Fla.—"Finally, someone my size!" Parton exclaimed when Malubay approached the piano during rehearsals—wept in fellow finalist Kristy Lee Cook's arms upon hearing the news.

Cook was there to lend comfort because she, too, was in the bottom three. She was joined by Brooke White, who was in the danger zone for the first time after trying her folksy hand at "Jolene," which sounded good but, according to Simon Cowell, was lacking emotion.

"I thought all of you looked very odd together as a group," the Brit noted, choosing to place a little blame on the band, as well.

Relieved to be out of the doghouse, meanwhile, were Syesha Mercado and Jason Castro, both bottom-feeders last week.

Mercado's decision to do "I Will Always Love You"—part of which proficiently echoed the simplicity of Parton's version while the other half failed to compare with Whitney Houston's modern-day classic—was a risk (Randy's never a fan of Whitney impersonators), but perhaps the song's recognition factor worked in her favor.

And Castro, strumming away, seemingly hit "Travelin' Thru" out of the park, turning in one of his richer vocals to date and capturing the message of the song. But Simon hated it.

"If this had been the first time I'd seen you or heard you, I wouldn't get it," he said Tuesday, losing his ticket to Dollywood in the process. But, luckily, it's the armchair critics Castro really has to impress, and he lives to grin another day.

On the flip side, the march to stardom continued for the fearsome foursome.

David Cook, who later in the evening would be rushed to the hospital to be treated for high blood pressure, rocked one of Parton's more contemporary tunes, the bluegrass-tinged "Little Sparrow" off of the 2001 album of the same name.

"If you can make a song about sparrows good, which actually you did, congratulations," opined Simon, always the country enthusiast. (As he did on Kenny Rogers night last season, the pop music aficionado found quite a lot to complain about Wednesday.)

And although he gave his fans a scare, Cook, who sources say was suffering from anxiety brought on by Idol pressures and family issues, ended up being just fine. A doctor at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center gave him medication to lower his blood pressure and the 25-year-old rocker was sent back to his hotel to rest up.

Cook was back onstage Wednesday, having little cause to worry after such a strong showing. "I'm cool, I'm not going anywhere," he told Ryan Seacrest.

Simon also took offense to Carly Smithson's wardrobe (or the person who dressed the lass, at least), telling her it was time to start looking like a star.

Well, at least she sounded like one while belting "Here You Come Again."

Next up was David Archuleta, who Simon said was "absolutely on the money" after singing "Smoky Mountain Memories," his version giving Parton all she could do to keep from crying during rehearsal.

And all was well for Michael Johns, who was rewarded for giving his best performance to date—a textured, soulful rendition of "It's All Wrong, But It's All Right"—by being the first contestant to be declared unequivocally safe.

Parton, who had nary a disparaging word for anyone this week, was on hand to perform the single "Jesus & Gravity" off of her new album, Backwoods Barbie.

Next week, no one will get the boot on Wednesday when the second annual Idol Gives Back charity extravaganza takes place.

While it turns out Ellen DeGeneres had to drop out of cohosting the event with Seacrest due to "production constraints," thesps ranging from Brad Pitt and Reese Witherspoon to Robin Williams and Billy Crystal are on board to participate either live or via video, and Idol alums such as Carrie Underwood, Chris Daughtry and Jordin Sparks are set to perform.

And then, after two weeks worth of votes have been tallied, someone's going to have to go on Thursday.

Kids Choose Miley, Johnny, Jessica

You don't have to be a kid to win big at the Kids' Choice Awards, but it certainly seems to help.

Just ask Miley Cyrus, who enjoyed the best of both worlds—singing and acting—at Nickelodeon's 21st annual slime fest Saturday night, taking home awards for both Favorite TV Actress and Favorite Female Singer at the kid-powered show.

The omnipresent Hannah Montana star, who also performed her new single "G.N.O.—Girl's Night Out" during the ceremony, was the only individual double winner of the night.

The night's only other multiple honoree was Nickelodeon's homegrown talent Drake & Josh, which not only took home the coveted orange blimp for Favorite TV Show, but earned series star Drake Bell the Favorite TV Actor award, as well.

Jack Black returned as host, opening the night with one of his trademark musical parody numbers—this time around a rousing rendition of "I Was Made for Sliming You," an ode to the wonders of the show's signature green goo—before welcoming the tween masses to "the slimiest, starriest, choiciest awards show ever!"

The first prize of the night went to Jessica Alba, who was crowned Favorite Movie Actress at the completely fan-determined awards show. As Black was keen to boast, more than 88 million votes were cast prior to the ceremony.

But for all the awards doled out over the course of the show—perpetual favorite Johnny Depp took home the nod for Favorite Movie Actor, though parents can rest assured it was for swash-buckling turn in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End rather than the blood-soaked Sweeney Todd, while Alvin and the Chipmunks was honored as Favorite Movie—slime was definitely the name of the game.

In keeping with the green theme, Heidi Klum gamely made an appearance at the show, coming onstage to pop slime-filled balloons with help from a giant bum-spanning pad covered in spikes. Usher and Akon got in on the messy action later in the show, blasting a sumo wrestler with an industrial strength slime hose and making their way through a slime-filled obstacle course, respectively.

The slimey set pièce de résistance, however, came courtesy of host Black and Orlando Bloom, whose climactic and lengthy joint sliming was one for the show's history books.

In a change of pace, the awards show also managed to make history for another, completely slime-unrelated reason: The distribution of the first ever Wannabe Award.

Cameron Diaz was the honored recipient, so chosen for being the celebrity kids most "want to be." Ashton Kutcher was on hand to present the award.

Pop star Ricky Martin has taken his fight against child trafficking to Cambodia.

Martin, who arrived in the country Wednesday, met with Interior Minister Sar Kheng and visited various projects run by non-governmental organizations fighting child trafficking and sexual exploitation.

"This is a fact-finding mission for us," Angel Saltos, executive director of the Ricky Martin Foundation, told The Associated Press on Saturday. "He wanted to see for himself."

Martin learned of Cambodia's child trafficking problems in February during a three-day United Nations conference in Vienna. He joined Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson, Egyptian first lady Suzanne Mubarak and other dignitaries in calling for action.

Some 2.5 million people are involved in forced labor as a result of trafficking, and 161 countries — on every continent and in every type of economy — are affected by the crime, the U.N. said.

Most victims are between the ages of 18 and 24, and an estimated 1.2 million children are trafficked each year, U.N. figures show.

The Ricky Martin Foundation does most of its work in Latin America.

Tom Petty Leans on Mudcrutch

To follow up a Super Bowl performance that was viewed by more than 90 million people, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers are going incognito.

Petty and longtime bandmates Mike Campbell and Benmont Tench are planning to hit the club circuit with the original members of Mudcrutch, the name of their group when they were still relegated to playing diners in their hometown of Gainesville, Fla.

After nearly 30 years, the five musicians—Petty, Campbell, Tench, Randall Marsh and Tom Leadon—reunited last summer on the West Coast to record an album.

"I just finished a record with Mudcrutch, my old band before the Heartbreakers," Petty wrote in a message posted on his website. "I am over the moon about it. I couldn't have hoped for it to be as good as it came out."

Mudcrutch will next crisscross California for about two weeks, starting April 12 at a benefit in Malibu for Los Angeles' Midnight Mission and winding up with a four-night engagement at the famed Troubadour in West Hollywood.

But although Petty has released 15 albums with the Heartbreakers (Campbell, Tench, Stan Lynch and Ron Blair, who quit in the 1980s to be replaced by Dan Epstein), Mudcrutch's upcoming effort will put that band's total at exactly...one.

The self-titled debut, featuring a 14-track combination of new and rerecorded tunes, is due out April 29.

In 1975, back when records were records, Mudcrutch released one single, "Depot Street," which was the A-side on an LP that also included the B-side "Wild Eyes."

Leadon, a childhood friend of Petty's who left the band in 1972 and now teaches guitar in Nashville, told the Tennessean newspaper that Mudcrutch's 2007 reunion was "just entirely unexpected."

"It was like a dream, the whole thing," he said. "Tom couldn't have been nicer. It was great to hang out with him again."

Meanwhile, Petty will return to his day job fronting the Heartbreakers on May 30 when the "Free Fallin'" rockers kick off a three-month North American tour in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Justin Goes to Bat for ESPN

The pop star has been tapped to host the 2008 ESPY Awards, slated to take place July 20 at Los Angeles' Nokia Theatre L.A. Live.

The annual awards, presented by ESPN, celebrate the best and brightest sporting moments of the year as decided by fans, who can vote for their favorites online at espys.tv beginning July 1.

"I'm very excited to be hosting the 16th edition of the ESPYs. I can't wait for the day of the show as I'm truly a sports junkie," Timberlake said in a statement.

"Since the last ESPYs, there have been amazing moments in sports, and I'm looking forward to recapping all of them with ESPN's diehard fans."

The hosting gig won't be Timberlake's first. Last year, he presided over the 20th annual Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards, where he was named Favorite Male Singer (and subsequently doused with a healthy dose of slime). The singer is up for the same honor at this year's Kids' Choice Awards, taking place Saturday.

DJ Drama promises that it will be one of the biggest mixtapes of the year. Arguably the top DJ in the mixtape field is teaming up with arguably the most renowned crew in the underground circuit. The first-ever G-Unit Gangsta Grillz is about to go into production.

"A couple of days after G-Unit dropped their Elephant in the Sand mixtape [two weeks ago], I got the call from 50 [Cent] and he was like, 'Drama, what up? It's time to do this G-Unit/ Aphilliates Gangsta Grillz.' He's really going heavy on the ThisIs50.com Web site, and he was saying basically it's time to get G-Unit hot in the South. What better way to do that than to do a Gangsta Grillz? Not only from a South aspect but from a quality street-music aspect. Me and Whoo Kid talked the other day, Fif and G-Unit are getting songs together, [my artists] Willie Da Kid and La Da Darkman are getting some songs together. I reached out to the King and told him it's a special project; I need him to get busy. We're gonna go in."

"The King" Drama is referring to is, of course, none other than the King of the South, T.I. Drama said he's also reached out to a slew of his other friends from the South and told them to get their best material ready. Fif's DJ, Whoo Kid, will also be heavily involved in putting the project together.

"Look out for some skits," Drama said. "Whoo Kid is a jokester. I'mma bring some personality to the table. We're gonna have fun with it. Let the mixtape game come back to life. It's been over a year since the historical [RIAA] raid, and the mixtape game is still here. That's what we're out to prove. 50 is a monster in the game, I'm a monster in the game. The combination is gonna kill the streets."

Drama just released the mixtape The Notorious L.A.D. from La the Darkman, while 50 and the Unit have been on a rampage for the past six months with Sabrina's Baby Boy, Return of the Body Snatchers and Elephant in the Sand.

"He's still working like he's hungry and putting product out every day," Dram said of Fif. "You can't take it as nothing but motivation."

Fab Four Sue Over Bootleg

The Beatles have come together to block distribution of an early bootleg.

Lawyers for the Fab Four's London-based company, Apple Records, filed a lawsuit last week against Fuego Entertainment of Miami Lakes, Fla., contending the online music store does not have permission to disseminate eight unreleased tracks that were made during a 1962 New Year's Eve performance at the Star Club in Hamburg, Germany.

Apple's complaint claims that since the Beatles had already signed an exclusive contract with EMI that barred third party recordings of their gigs, the tape was obtained without authorization.

The recording, titled Jammin' with the Beatles and Friends, Star Club, Hamburg, 1962, features Paul McCartney singing a cover of Hank Williams' "Lovesick Blues," he and John Lennon joining forces on "Ask Me Why" and six additional tracks. It is also notable for being the live debut of drummer Ringo Starr after the departure of member Pete Best.

The suit goes on to state that Fuego and two sister firms violated the mop tops' copyrights by streaming snippets of the concert on the Web and improperly using the long T that's long been part of the band's logo for its own purposes.

Apple also notes the bootleg's audio is of such crude quality that it "dilutes and tarnishes the extraordinarily valuable image associated with the Beatles."

Apple Corps attorney Paul LiCalsi said the company was forced to take Fuego to court after the company ignored a cease-and-desist letter sent by Apple regarding the remastering of the performance and the sale of it on CD, though Fuego did take down the audio excerpts.

"This appears to us to be a garden-variety bootleg recording," Apple Corps attorney, LiCalsi, told the media.

Not so, according to Fuego's president, Hugo Cancio.

"Don't claim that these were just bootlegged. It's not like today, that you just go in with a phone or BlackBerry and you record," he said. "The world deserves to hear these tracks. The fact is that we have it, they don't and that is what's bothering them."

Cancio added: "It's unfair to millions of Beatles fans not to allow this recording to be put out. The world deserves to hear these tracks."

Cancio's firm reportedly bought the recording for an undisclosed amount from partner and owner, Jeffrey Collins. No word how he got his hands on it.

Aside from an injunction preventing the tape's release, Apple is seeking $15 million in actual and punitive damages.

Dolly Parton Releases Album On Own Label

Dolly Parton knows a good investment when she sees one, and these days she sees one in the mirror.

Parton, whose business portfolio includes a theme park and an entertainment production company, says she's spending a lot of her own money trying to get back on country radio with her new CD, "Backwoods Barbie."

"I'm looking at it like an investment," she told The Associated Press. "I thought, 'I've made enough money. I can afford to invest a little in myself.'"

She has self-released the disc on her own label, Dolly Records, and hired a seven-member promotions team.

"I purposely tailor-made this to try to get some hits," Parton explained.

The album reached No. 2 on Billboard in its second week, her best showing in 17 years.

The first single, "Better Get to Livin'," a country-pop song she describes as sonically similar to Keith Urban, sputtered at No. 48. But the second single, "Jesus & Gravity," is just now arriving at radio.

At age 62, Parton remains an icon and inspiration to younger singers.

"I don't think there's anything that woman can't do," said rising country star Kellie Pickler, who calls Parton her greatest influence. "She just walks into a room and lights it up. She's got that 'it' factor that money can't buy. She's the whole package."

Music Row began to lose interest in Parton in the '90s as a new crop of country stars emerged. Her last Top 5 hit, "Rockin' Years," was in 1991, and she hasn't had a major label record deal in 10 years.

"When it changed I was still as serious as ever and was thinking I'm still as good as ever, if I ever was any good," Parton said.

She has watched with interest as new technology has created opportunities without the big labels.

"Now the majors are what they used to think I was: history," she said.

"I thought this is a good time, but I need to make an all-out effort. ... Whatever it takes, you fight for it. You do what you have to do to feed your habit, and I'm a music addict."

After making a career out of spectacle, shock value and other open displays of eccentricity, Marilyn Manson is now looking to cover up.

The heavy-metalist has filed a motion requesting that all of his financial and business records be kept sealed during the discovery process pertaining to his ex-band mate's pending lawsuit against him.

Former Marilyn Manson (the band) keyboardist Stephen Bier, aka Madonna Wayne Gacy, sued Manson for breach of contract in August, claiming the milky-eyed singer had used the group's money to, among other things, finance a drug habit, pay for his wedding to Dita Von Teese and decorate his Chatsworth, Calif., home with an array of oddities, including Nazi memorabilia and a human skeleton.

Manson, whose real name is Brian Warner, countersued in December, accusing Bier of failing to meet contractual touring, recording and merchandising agreements. He's been collecting royalties, Manson says of his former ivory-tickler, but during his tenure with the band frequently showed up late and otherwise "failed to render services to the best of his ability and in a practical and cooperative manner."

Because Bier's allegations directly reference Manson's cash value, his attorney argues, he should be allowed an order of protection protecting the confidentiality of his records.

Meanwhile, Bier's attorneys say "hogwash," citing Manson's well-known penchant for public displays of… whatever.

"Manson lives his life in the public eye," a filing opposing the defense's motion states. "He communicates frequently with the press regarding his personal affairs, openly discusses his frequent drug use, his failed marriage with burlesque model Dita Von Teese, his current relationship with actress Evan Rachel Wood, and his wild, rock 'n' roll lifestyle."

He also drinks absinthe and openly discusses his friends' and band members' sexual proclivities, as well, Bier claims.

Stern heard arguments Wednesday but has yet to rule on the request.

If the order is granted as per Manson's specifications, Bier's lawyers will have access to the records but they would not be made part of the public record and his camp would not be allowed to show them to anyone else.

The order is necessary before the two sides can proceed with depositions, Manson's lawyer says. A hearing during which Bier's side is set to renew its petition to depose the "Beautiful People" rocker is scheduled for Apr. 10.

Quincy Jones' Honorary Doctorate

Quincy Jones will receive an honorary doctorate at the University of Washington commencement, where the musician-composer-producer-arranger will speak on June 14.

The university's regents voted to award the degree at their meeting Thursday.

The 75-year-old Jones moved to Bremerton, Wash., with his family at age 10 and began playing the trumpet in junior high school. He also sang in a gospel quartet before moving to Seattle.

He has toured with Lionel Hampton's band, and has arranged for other musicians including Duke Ellington, Ray Charles and County Basie.

He's best known, though, as the producer of two of the biggest selling records of all time: Michael Jackson's 1982 album "Thriller" and the single "We Are the World."

UCLA Medical Center has launched an investigation into some 25 employees who peeked at the singer's confidential medical records during her late January/ early February stay in the psychiatric ward. This week, the hospital began the process of firing 13 employees, has suspended at least six more, and is considering discipline against six other physicians who looked at her computerized records.

"It's not only surprising," human resources director Jeri Simpson told the paper, adding that similar firings also followed Spears' 2005 stay, when she gave birth to her first child, Sean Preston. "It's very frustrating, and it's very disappointing.

"I feel like we do everything that we possibly can to ensure the privacy of our patients, and I know we feel horrible that it happened again," Simpson added, offering an apology to Spears. "I don't know what it is about this particular person."

UCLA confirmed that, in an attempt to keep this breach of ethics from occurring, officials had sent out a memo on the morning Spears was hospitalized. The memo reminded employees that they were only allowed to view their own patients' records and that doing otherwise violated a federal patient-privacy law called the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act.

"Each member of our workforce, which includes our physicians, faculty, employees, volunteers and students, is responsible to ensure that medical information is only accessed as required for treatment, for facilitating payment of a claim, or for supporting our healthcare operations," the memo read. "Please remember that any unauthorized access by a workforce member will be subject to disciplinary action, which could include termination."

During routine monitoring of inappropriate record-viewing, UCLA officials uncovered violations by both medical and nonmedical personnel involving Spears' records, following an electronic trail left by the employees.

Snoop Dogg Rolls Out The Hits

You call it promoting an album. Snoop Dogg calls it going out with the homies and having the time of his life.

This week in New York, the Dogg has been everywhere from the "The Late Show With David Letterman" to a recent album-release party for Ego Trippin'. On Thursday night, he even taped the latest episode of "VH1 Storytellers." Snoop threw the VH1 rulebook out the window when he told the audience that he didn't have a tale to tell about the first track he performed, "Whateva U Do."

Obviously this wasn't going to be the normal show where the audience sits down to listen to the artist's musical selections and hear some nice antidotes. Snoop was intent on making the show a full party, and his music — including hits like "Gin & Juice" and "Drop It Like It's Hot" — would not allow anyone in the crowd to stay in their seats. People stood and danced all night. The Dogg was backed by a band — "The Snoopadelics" — that included Teddy Riley; DJs Quik, Battlecat and Jelly; Soopafly on piano; a horn section; backup singers; and Tha Dogg Pound on hypeman vocals.

The Long Beach legend did have plenty of stories to share later on, from his days riding shotgun with Dr. Dre and being medically cleared to use marijuana (he claimed to have glaucoma) to a quip about his children telling him he didn't make songs that kids wanted to dance to. "I said, 'N---a, what you talkin' about?' " Snoop said to the crowd with a grin.

Snoop, in fact, has come up with a foolproof dance song called "Life of the Party," which had guest stars Mistah F.A.B. and Too Short walk up from the crowd for a must-see show.

Another surprise was when Snoop and company performed the Everlast country song "My Medicine." The fact that Snoop Dogg performed a country song is still taking time to settle in, and the fact that he did a country song that got the whole audience to clap their hands and bop like they were in church was a sight to behold.

Gap Band lead singer Charlie Wilson came out for "Can't Say Goodbye." The song is about a man who is trying to be there for his family, but he refuses to let the streets go. Once the tune started, an emotional Snoop made the band stop and restart. "That record makes me wanna cry," Snoop said.

The best moment of the show was unscheduled and may not even make the show's cut due to some red tape. The Dogg and his Pound did a rendition of Morris Day and the Time's "Cool." Snoop said he couldn't perform the song on TV because the "man who owns it wouldn't clear it." (According to ASCAP, the writers of that song are former Revolution guitarist Dez Dickerson and a man named Prince.) The band — which sounded better than the recorded tracks — kept their consistent, overachieving sound up, jamming on instrumentals for "Cool" for five minutes before Snoop started singing.

After "Cool," Snoop sat on a stool and kept singing, "Paid the cost to be the boss," while the band played. Then he freestyled, bringing some melody to cuss words. "We just some real mutha----as," said Snoop. He and Riley went back and forth — Snoop in his real voice, Riley using the auto-tune device at his keyboard.

"VH1 Storytellers: Snoop Dogg" premieres March 31.

Nine Inch Nails’ Trent Reznor launched a YouTube channel that will host a film festival of fan-made movies that feature tracks from Ghosts I-IV, insuring the fans’ films will be reduced to compressed, blotchy, out-of-sync YouTube clips. Reznor himself will judge the competition, along with “special guests.” Fans can upload their videos onto the YouTube page now, but Reznor insists to take your time, since the whole process is going to take a few months. The rules state, “Please don’t just submit simple image slideshows.”

In other Reznor news, he criticized Radiohead’s pay-what-you-want release of In Rainbows, calling it “insincere” and “a bait and switch to get you to pay for a MySpace-quality stream as a way to promote a very traditional record sale.” “What they did right: they surprised the world with a new record, and it was available digitally first,” Reznor said of his possible Lollapalooza co-headliners. “What they did wrong: by making it such a low quality thing, not even including artwork … to me that feels insincere.” Reznor’s comments come one day after he revealed his self-released instrumental album Ghosts I-IV raked in $1.6 million in first week label-free sales.

The King of Pop and the Queen of Soul are working to resolve problems with their respective castles.

With a public auction looming, Michael Jackson has managed to refinance his outstanding loan on Neverland Ranch in time to save the property, his lawyer said Thursday.

Attorney L. Londell McMillan said the pop star had worked out a "confidential" agreement with Fortress Investment Group, LLC. that would allow him to hold onto the 2,500-acre spread in Los Olivos, California.

The property had been scheduled to go on the block on Wednesday after the singer defaulted on a $24.5 million loan payment.

Jackson has not lived at Neverland since his acquittal on child molestation charges in 2005.

During his ordeal, he said he felt his privacy had been so violated by authorities' searches of the ranch that he would never occupy the premises again on a fulltime basis.

"I won't live there ever again," he said during a December 2003 60 Minutes interview. "It's a house now. It's not a home anymore. I'll only visit."

Now that his finances are seemingly in order once again (at least for the time being), he can continue to stop by when the mood strikes him.

Meanwhile, Aretha Franklin has a homeowner's headache of her own on her hands.

The singer's $700,000 mansion in Detroit has slipped into foreclosure over $445 in 2005 taxes and late fees, the Detroit Free Press reports. In all, Franklin owes $19,192 in back taxes on the property.

Franklin blamed the situation on an attorney's error.

The singer has until Mar. 31 to settle the outstanding payments and reclaim the property.

Janet's Hospital Escapade

Janet Jackson was admitted to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center late Monday after coming down with a nasty—again, not in the good, patented Miss Jackson way—virus.

Jackson's rep, Patti Webster said, "She's been battling this flu like everyone else," adding that the singer otherwise boasts a clean bill of health.

The 41-year-old has since been released, Webster said, but will not be appearing as the musical guest on this weekend's Saturday Night Live, as scheduled.

News of the singer's trip to the sick bay was first reported by Us Weekly, which claimed Jackson was admitted after experiencing "shortness of breath."

The ailment comes in the wake of some good news for the singer, whose new album, Discipline, debuted atop the Billboard album charts last week, her sixth disc to hit number one. She will tour later this year.

Not one for a lack of projects, Jackson also recently confirmed that she is in the process of cowriting a book about weight loss with her nutritionist, in which she will discuss her history of being an "emotional eater."

The as-yet-untitled tome will include tips on a healthy approach to eating (feed a cold, hospitalize the flu?) and is due out by the end of the year.

She told the press she really enjoy writing with Justin. That they had psychoanalytic sessions whenever writing songs, sit down and start talking about situations. And then start talking about issues or problems or relationships with people. She adds further that writing together with somebody is very intimate....that was fun, because Justin is open and he's got talent. He's a songwriter and Madonna has not worked with a lot of songwriters where she's instantly connected and start riffing and playing with the rhythm of the words. Hootie And The Blowfish Solo Efforts

When Hootie and the Blowfish play at a fundraiser to benefit the Animal Mission this week, the bandmates likely will compare notes on their recent solo efforts.

Guitarist Mark Bryan and lead singer Darius Rucker are working on their second solo efforts, while drummer Jim "Soni" Sonefeld is making his solo debut. Bassist Dean Felber doesn't have any solo plans yet.

Bryan's effort includes a punkish track "Glad to be Alive" that didn't make the cut for the most recent Hootie effort — 2005's "Looking for Lucky."

"I can totally respect it's not a Hootie song," Bryan said. His "End of the Front" has a diverse lineup from punk to pop, rock to bluegrass.

"Stylistically it's all over the place," Bryan told The (Columbia) State. "But it's because the songs were written over a 10-year period."

Rucker, who released his first solo effort "Back to Then" in 2002, is going a little bit country for his second effort.

"I know that a lot of country fans have 'Cracked Rear View,' " Rucker said of the band's breakthrough album, which has sold more than 16 million copies and put the Columbia-based group on the map. "We've never really been that far from country. It came out so organically."

For his debut, drummer Sonefeld went more progressive with his "Snowman Melting" being released by independent label Aquarian Nation.

Usher's New Album

Usher has finally announced his album title and is closing in on a release date. The singer's reps confirmed that the new Usher album is named Here I Stand and will come out sometime in June.

Usher's return comes at a time when he may have more momentum on his side than any other performer in the business. His album's first single, "Love in This Club," is #1 in the country and made the third-largest jump to the top in the 50-year history of Billboard's Hot 100 chart. The record, which was just #51 last week, rose 50 spots. The single's video is being filmed in Atlanta next week.

The quick rise of "Love in This Club" — which features Young Jeezy — can partially be credited to producer Polow Da Don's triumphant club beat and his impetuous nature. First, he let Young Jeezy get on the track without Usher's permission; then, he leaked the song several weeks before it was supposed to be released.

"I actually leaked it. I'm the culprit," Polow told the press recently. "It's no secret. I told [Usher] when I saw him that I had to put my relationship on the line. 'If it fails, I know you probably gonna be mad at me. I know you probably won't f--- with me anymore.' I just felt like it was so much back-and-forth [between Usher and his record label]. I know this record is it! I'm out there, I know what it is. It got 600 spins in two days. That's great for a record label. Imagine how good that is for one person who leaked it? Radio stations were getting it off the Internet and playing it. Before I left Atlanta, they were playing it 10 times in a row.

"When I spoke to Usher, he was like, 'Maaan, why'd you do it?' " Polow added. "He knew I leaked the record; he didn't have to ask. I was like, 'What?' He said, 'You know you leaked the record.' But he was getting good calls on it too."

As for Jeezy's appearance on the song, Polow told last Monday it was perfect timing. The Snowman asked to be on the record, arriving to the studio minutes after Usher had left.

"I was like, 'Man, I don't know,' " Polow recalled of Jeezy's request. "He said, 'Just let me do the verse, dawg. If you don't wanna keep it, cool.' I played the version that night at [Jermaine Dupri's] club, and Usher went crazy. That was the first time he heard it."

In addition to Polow, the Here I Stand recording sessions have included collaborations with Dupri, Dre & Vidal, Timbaland, Ludacris and Nelly, with Sean "The Pen" Garrett and Lil Jon still scheduled to check in.

Justin Timberlake On NBC

Timberlake is teaming with Reveille, the production company behind Ugly Betty and The Office, to bring the hit Peruvian comedy My Problem with Women to the Peacock net, NBC confirmed Friday.

Timberlake will serve as an executive producer on the project, which is based on Peru's Mi Problema con las Mujeres, a show that launched in July and has since been sold in 20 countries.

"I am very excited to be collaborating with Reveille to bring this hugely successful format to NBC," the singer said in a statement.

In other Timberlake news, Mr. SexyBack will be inducting none other than Madonna into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on Monday. The duo recently collaborated on the Queen of Pop's upcoming album, Hard Candy, which is due out on Apr. 28.

According to the Daily Star's Playlist, fans attending the star's gig on Monday (March 3) had their brollies confiscated by security guards before they got into Scotland's Aberdeen Exhibition Centre for the show.

Security guard Andy McDonald told the newspaper: "We don't normally ask people to leave an umbrella outside. But we were taking precautions over a potential accident.

"We were told that Rihanna's song features dancing with umbrellas onstage. We didn't want the crowd following her actions and someone getting their eye poked out."

Cyndi Lauper will take her "True Colors" tour back on the road this summer.

Lauper, whose tour last year promoted gay rights, will open the second go-round in Boston on May 31 alongside fellow headliners Rosie O'Donnell and the B-52s, it was announced Wednesday.

Carson Kressley ("Queer Eye for the Straight Guy") will host the 24-city event, which winds down in Morrison, Colo., on July 5.

"The tour is a nonstop five-hour music party with a message," Lauper, 54, said. "This year, the party only gets bigger and our message to the fans is to get out and vote in November."

Guest artists such as Joan Jett and the Blackhearts, Regina Spektor, the Indigo Girls and Wanda Sykes will perform at various cities throughout the tour.

Four upcoming stops on Van Halen's reunion tour have been postponed due to an unidentified illness currently afflicting frontman Eddie Van Halen, concert promoter Live Nation announced Monday.

According to Eddie's physician, "he is undergoing a battery of comprehensive medical tests to determine a defined diagnosis and recommended medical procedures," the company said in a statement.

Shows scheduled for Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday in Dallas; Cincinnati, Ohio; Raleigh, North Carolina; and Baltimore have been reset for Apr. 24, Apr. 22, Apr. 13 and Apr. 15, respectively. Tickets for the canceled dates will be honored at the rescheduled shows.

Otherwise, the "Jump" rockers plan to resume their road trip Mar. 11 in Charlottesville, Virginia

But what Van Halen really wants its fans to know is that, contrary to some reports, the band's routinely sold-out tour has not been canceled. Performances are still booked through Apr. 25, where Eddie Van Halen, his son Wolfgang, original frontman David Lee Roth and drummer Alex Van Halen are supposed to hit up Sacramento, California.

Eddie Van Halen, who received a clean bill of health in 2002 after battling tongue cancer for several years, has also struggled alcoholism and substance abuse in the past.

His most recent stint in rehab was last March, just as rumors of a possible reunion was lighting a fire under fans of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-bound band.

The new British Broadcasting Corp. documentary has claimed that Rolling Stones singer Mick Jagger escaped an assassination plot hatched in 1969 by the Hells Angels,

A program to be broadcast on BBC Radio 4 on Monday says the rock star was the target of the plot following a purported dispute with the motorcycle gang over concert security.

Jagger had vowed not to use Hells Angel members as bouncers following the death in December 1969 of an 18-year-old fan at a notorious free performance at Altamont Speedway in Northern California.

In return, gang members hatched a plan to kill Jagger at his holiday home in Long Island, New York, the BBC claimed.

"The Hells Angels were so angered by Jagger's treatment of them that they decided to get rid of him," Tom Mangold, the presenter of the program, was quoted as telling Britain's Sunday Telegraph newspaper.

He said the plan was disclosed during an interview with Mark Young, a former FBI officer, for the BBC's "The FBI at 100" documentary.

Mangold said the men tried to reach Jagger by sea. "The boat was hit by a storm and all of the men were thrown overboard," he was quoted as saying. They all survived but made no other attempt on his life, Mangold said.

It was not clear whether Jagger was ever informed of the alleged plot against him.

LD Communications, Jagger's publicists in Britain, did not immediately return calls requesting comment.

The Hells Angels Motorcycle Club (HAMC) is a world-wide motorcycle club whose members traditionally ride Harley-Davidson motorcycles. In the United States, and Canada, the Hells Angels are incorporated as the Hells Angels Motorcycle Corporation. Jennifer Lopez and Marc Anthony have reportedly named their newborn twins Max and Emme.

Lopez' manager, Simon Fields, confirmed the babies' names to People magazine on Friday.

The twins were born at a Long Island hospital on Feb. 22, with 5-pound, 7-ounce Emme arriving about 15 minutes before her 6-pound brother. The hospital's name was not disclosed.

Fields said then that Lopez, a first-time mother at 39, was "thrilled" at the babies' arrival. The 38-year-old Anthony has three other children.

The Latin music power couple married in 2004.

The babies arrived a day after both their parents were named as winners of Latin music's "Premio Lo Nuestro" awards. Lopez won this year's award for best solo pop singer, while Anthony was named salsa artist of the year.

Terrell waived his first court hearing, where he would have been formally notified of the charges against him, on Friday (February 29), a Gwinnett County Magistrate Court clerk told the AJC. Defense attorney Lyle Porter, who could not be reached Friday, has been assigned to represent him.

"Investigators interviewed Mr. Terrell, and as a result of the interview, there was enough probable cause to charge him with the murder of his mother and two sisters," a police spokesperson, who said the motive for the shootings was still under investigation, told the paper.

Mike Smith Of 'Dave Clark Five'

Dave Clark Five lead singer Mike Smith, died Thursday outside London, less than two weeks before the band is to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. He was 64.

The cause was pneumonia, a complication of a spinal cord injury he sustained in 2003 that had left him paralyzed below the ribs, according to Margo Lewis, his agent in New York.

The Dave Clark Five, part of the so-called British Invasion of the early 1960s, recorded a string of hits including “Glad All Over,” “Catch Us If You Can” and “Over and Over.” The band made 12 appearances on the Ed Sullivan Show by 1966. Mr. Smith also played keyboards and helped write songs for the band, which was founded by its drummer, Dave Clark.

In 2006, he told the British newspaper The Daily Mail that he had injured his spinal cord when he fell while climbing over a locked seven-foot-high garden gate behind his home in the Costa del Sol region of Spain.

Mr. Smith had been in a hospital outside London since shortly after the accident and was released in December. He had been living near the hospital when he was admitted again on Wednesday, Ms. Lewis said.

After his accident, Mr. Smith drew support from, among others, Bruce Springsteen, Steve Van Zandt and Peter Noone of Herman’s Hermits, who helped to defray medical costs through donations and fund-raisers.

In 2005, Paul Shaffer, the “Late Show With David Letterman” bandleader, helped to organize a benefit concert in New York featuring many of Mr. Smith’s fellow British Invasion stars, including The Zombies and Peter & Gordon. A DVD of the concert is to be released in March.

Michael George Smith was born in 1943 in Edmonton, England. He is survived by his wife, Arlene, who is known as Charlie.

After the Dave Clark Five disbanded in 1970, Mr. Smith performed for a time in a new band with Mr. Clark but worked mainly as a producer and songwriter. He began performing again in the 1990s and had formed a new band, “Mike Smith’s Rock Engine,” when he was injured.

Before his death, preparations were under way to transport Mr. Smith to New York so that he could attend the Hall of Fame induction ceremony on March 10, Ms. Lewis said.

Winehouse Hearing Postponed

A hearing stemming from Winehouse's arrest for drug possession in Norway back in October has been postponed at her lawyer's request, Norwegian news agency NTB reports.

At the time of their run-in with the law, Winehouse and her husband, Blake Fielder-Civil, were held overnight in Bergen, Norway, on charges of possessing about a quarter-ounce of marijuana. They were released the following morning after each paying fines of $715.

Winehouse later appealed the fine, claiming she was unaware that handing over the cash was tantamount to pleading guilty to the pot charge and alleging that Norwegian police mishandled the case by failing to provide an English translator.

A drug charge on her record could create problems for the singer when it comes to obtaining the proper visas to perform in the United States and other parts of the world.

However, Bergen police attorney Rudolf Christoffersen maintained at the time that the singer was only questioned by an English-speaking officer who explained in detail the charges and consequences of paying the fine.

With Friday's hearing fast approaching, Winehouse's attorney Ole Kvelstad claimed the singer has not received a letter detailing the date, hence the impetus for the proposed postponement.

However, Christoffersen claimed Winehouse knew the date of the hearing, even if the letter has yet to arrive.

The Norwegian district court ultimately agreed to postpone the hearing because Fielder-Civil is due to appear in a British courtroom the same day on a separate matter.

Winehouse, who recently collected five Grammy awards, including Best New Artist, is reportedly on the up-and-up while receiving outpatient treatment for drug addiction.

Earlier this month, her mother, Janis Winehouse, told British morning show GMTV her daughter was "on the road to recovery."

Brown's attorney said Tuesday a Brockton District Court clerk magistrate found no probable cause to issue a criminal complaint, but recommended that Brown volunteer to mentor young people, which Brown wanted to do anyway.

Brown agreed to a year's community service and his attorney said if no other issues arise over the next year, the matter will be struck from the docket.

The case began when police responding to a disturbance at a Brockton hotel on Dec. 1. They said they found the 39-year-old Brown sitting in an SUV in the parking lot, with cocaine in his possession.

Michael Jackson's Neverland Ranch will be put up for sale at a public auction next month unless he pays the more than $24 million he still owes on the property, according to a Tuesday court filing.

Financial Title Co. filed the notice of trustee's sale with Santa Barbara County Superior Court, setting the auction date for March 19. A spokeswoman for Jackson did not immediately return a call for comment.

Julie Wagner, a manager at the San Francisco-based title company, confirmed that Jackson's property was set for auction.

Court documents obtained by Fox News warn Jackson that he has until the date of the auction to take action to keep his lavish estate.

If the property does go to auction, the initial asking price could be higher than the $24.5 million Jackson owes because of interest due and other costs, according to the filing. Everything from the estate's merry-go-round and other carnival rides, locomotives, sculptures to the curtains and bath tubs in the estate would be up for sale should the auction take place, according to the filing.

The reclusive star no longer lives at the famous, 2,500-acre spread in Los Olivos, a popular tourist spot northwest of Santa Barbara known for its wineries.

Jackson's been mostly residing abroad since his 2005 acquittal on child molestation charges, although he has spent time in Las Vegas as he tries to stage his musical comeback.
